Introduction

We are both 44 years old, and our son has a twin sister and a three-year-old sister. We reside in Australia.

Pregnancy and Birth

During pregnancy, my twin boy was not growing well, but he was still induced at 36 weeks, which was inappropriate since the last trimester is crucial for development. My son was underweight, and although they initially suggested placing him in the NICU, they decided against it and advised me to monitor and feed him. However, we were discharged the very next day.

Three days after coming home, both twins were readmitted to the hospital due to projectile vomiting and jaundice. I took my son to a doctor every week and even made an appointment with a pediatrician because I felt his ribs clicking, but each time, he was told that everything was fine and healthy.

The Day Everything Changed

My son was always fussy and cried when picked up, though he seemed comfortable when left alone. When he was two months old, he stopped breathing after having a bottle. I called the ambulance immediately.

Upon arrival at the hospital, within four hours, they found fractures and bleeding on his brain and behind his eyes. They automatically accused me of shaken baby syndrome (SBS).

When the Diagnosis Was Made

CT scans, MRIs, and X-rays were conducted. I didn’t realize I was being suspected until a doctor approached me and said she knew what was wrong with my son. When I asked for details, she stated that I had shaken him.

Child protective services behaved inappropriately. They continuously threatened me, saying they would remove all of my children if I did not cooperate or speak to them. They also warned me that they could be uncooperative but chose not to be.

I was devastated—crying, not eating, and deeply worried about my son’s well-being. My family was equally emotional. I have 4 medical expert reports, all obtained through my lawyer.

Inside the Legal System

As soon as we were transferred to the children’s hospital, two detectives awaited me there for questioning. I was also questioned daily by child protection services.

Three days after my son’s admission, all three of my children were removed from my care and placed with family members. They are now separated.

I do not actively participate in meetings with child protective services due to their constant dishonesty; instead, I request that they communicate via email. No charges have been filed against me, but an AVO (Apprehended Violence Order) has been issued for the twins only. My case is ongoing, and we are scheduled for a trial in November.

Living Under Suspicion

Initially, we were all very emotional and did not know how to handle this situation. Our three-year-old constantly asks to come home and cries when we see her. The twins are too young to understand the separation, but I am losing our bond as they grow closer to their caregiver.

This has severely impacted my mental health, as I have been accused of something I did not do. However, with time, I have become stronger and will continue fighting for my children.

Financially, we are struggling greatly. We have invested every dollar into this case, taken out loans, and borrowed money from family members. Despite feeling down and crying daily for my children, it is their love that keeps me going, and I will not stop until they return home with me again.
